Pink noise, explained: the sound between white and brown

Pink noise gets its name from the same light-spectrum analogy as white and brown noise, and it sits precisely between the two. Its energy decreases by a consistent amount with each rise in frequency, rather than staying flat like white noise or dropping off steeply like brown noise. The result is a fuller, warmer texture that a lot of people find sits in a comfortable middle ground.

This is also the profile found throughout nature — rain, wind, and rustling leaves all follow roughly this same 1/f pattern, which is part of why pink noise tends to read as more organic than the flatter hiss of white noise.

One of the more active areas of current sleep research specifically involves pink noise: closed-loop acoustic stimulation, where brief pink-noise pulses are timed precisely to a sleeper's own slow brainwave oscillations during deep sleep. Some lab studies using this technique report measurable increases in slow-wave activity, a sleep stage linked to memory consolidation. It's worth being precise about what this does and doesn't show — this is a specialized, precisely timed lab technique, not the same as playing a looped pink noise track overnight, so the results don't necessarily transfer directly to ordinary at-home listening.

For everyday masking purposes, pink noise is often described as gentler than white noise without going as deep or heavy as brown noise. Since ear sensitivity to frequency is genuinely individual, it's worth testing pink noise directly against both alternatives rather than assuming one is objectively better.

As always, treat this as a low-risk tool to experiment with rather than a guaranteed fix — sleep difficulty that's frequent or severe is worth discussing with a doctor.
