The science of bedtime stories — for adults

The appeal of a bedtime story doesn't disappear with childhood. Slow, softly paced narration gives a busy mind something gentle to follow, which can crowd out the looping, unresolved thoughts that often keep people awake.

This works through a mechanism sleep researchers sometimes call cognitive shuffling: replacing anxious or effortful thinking with low-stakes, meandering mental content. A sleep story, especially one without real tension or urgency, is almost purpose-built for this. Nothing needs to be resolved, remembered, or acted on.

Narration also tends to slow naturally, and a slower speaking pace has a mild entraining effect on a listener's own breathing and heart rate, similar in principle to how a slow ambient soundtrack works, but layered with the extra pull of following a voice.

For the best effect, choose stories with minimal plot tension, familiar or predictable settings, and a narrator whose pace is unhurried. The goal isn't to stay engaged until the end; if you're asleep before the story finishes, it did its job.
