White noise vs. brown noise: what's the difference, and which helps you relax?

The 'color' names for noise all describe the same basic thing: how energy is distributed across the frequency spectrum, borrowed loosely from the visible light spectrum where different wavelengths correspond to different colors.
White noise has equal energy at every frequency, the audio equivalent of static. It's excellent at masking sudden environmental sounds because it covers the full range evenly, but many people find it thin or hissy over long listening sessions.
Brown noise (sometimes called red noise) drops off much more steeply at higher frequencies than pink noise does, leaving mostly the deep, low-end rumble — closer to a distant waterfall or a low-flying plane heard from far away. Many people describe it as feeling 'rounder' or heavier than white noise.
Which one helps most is genuinely individual. Some early research and a great deal of anecdotal reporting suggest people with tinnitus or high sound sensitivity often prefer the gentler roll-off of pink or brown noise, while people mainly trying to block sharp, sudden sounds sometimes do better with the full-spectrum coverage of white noise.
The practical takeaway: treat noise color as a preference to test, not a prescription. Try each for a few nights, and pay attention not just to whether you fall asleep faster, but whether you wake up feeling rested.
